Step 1: Checking the Power Source

  1. Verify the Outlet: Ensure that the wall outlet is working by testing it with another working device, such as monitor, lamp, and so on.
  2. Check the Power Strip: When using a power strip or surge protector, make sure it’s turned on and working properly. If possible, bypass the power strip to check if the power strip is faulty.

Step 2: Inspecting the AC Adapter and Cable

  1. Visual Inspection: Look for any physical damage or fraying on the power adapter, cable, or the power port on the laptop. If you notice any damage, stop using the device immediately and contact Help Desk.
  2. Connection Check: Ensure the adapter or charger is securely connected to the laptop and the power source.
  3. Use a Different Adapter: Always use Dell provided or Dell-approved adapter or charger with your laptop. If available, test with a known working adapter to check if the adapter is faulty.

Step 3: Resetting the Real-Time Clock (RTC)

Real-time clock (RTC) reset restores the BIOS to factory default settings and resets the date and time. The reset process may restart the laptop several times depending on how it is configured.

Note: Real-time clock (RTC) reset is only available on some Alienware, Inspiron, Latitude, Precision, Vostro, and XPS laptops.

  1. Unplug the Device: Disconnect all external devices.
  2. Connect AC Adapter: Plug in the ac adapter or charger to the laptop.
  3. Hold the Power Button: Press and hold the power button for 30-35 seconds, until the power LED blinks three times to discharge residual power.
  4. Release Power Button: Release the power button to complete the real-time clock reset.
    Note: If the power is interrupted or the power button is held for less than 25 seconds or longer than 40 seconds, the reset process is aborted. Attempt to reset the RTC again.
  5. Reconnect and Test: Plug the adapter back in and try to power on the laptop.

Troubleshooting a Dell Desktop That Does Not Turn On

Follow this troubleshooting sequence outlined below to systematically address power issues with your desktop.

Step 1: Inspecting the Power Button and Cables

  1. Visual Inspection: Check the power button for any physical damage or sticking issues.
  2. Cable Connections: Ensure the power cable is securely connected to the power supply. Ensure that all the internal power cables are connected properly to the motherboard and components.
  3. Swap Power Cable: Attempt to swap the power cable with the monitor power cable. A faulty power cable may cause power issues.

Step 2: Testing with a Different Power Outlet

  1. Change Outlets: Plug the desktop into a different wall outlet to identify a faulty power outlet.
  2. Check the Power Strip: When using a power strip or surge protector, make sure it’s turned on and working properly. If possible, bypass the power strip to check if the power strip is faulty.

Step 3: Checking the Power Supply

  1. Unplug the Power Cable: Disconnect the power cable from the power supply unit (PSU).
  2. Hold the Power Button: Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds to discharge residual power.
  3. Test Power Supply Unit:On select Dell desktops, there is a Built-In Self-Test (BIST) button located on the power supply. Reconnect the power cable. Press this button to check if the LED turns on.
    • LED Response: If the LED turns on, the power supply is functioning properly. Go to the next step.
    • No LED Response: If the LED does not turn on, it indicates a faulty power supply. Contact Helpdesk to explore repair options available in your location based on your device’s warranty status.

Step 4: Resetting the Real-Time Clock (RTC)

Real-time clock (RTC) reset restores the BIOS to factory default settings and resets the date and time. The reset process may restart the desktop multiple times depending on the configuration.

Note: Real-time clock (RTC) reset is only available on supported Inspiron, OptiPlex, Precision, Vostro, and XPS desktops.
